CALIFORNIA CITY STAND DOWN
Updated: Aug 2
On June 10th 2023, Bombshell Bettys Calendar for Charity had the pleasure of joining other charities and organizations in the support of our veterans at the California City Stand Down. Stand Down events are typically one- to three-day events organized by Community-Based Veterans Services Organizations, Non-Profit Organizations, and County Veterans Service Offices in cooperation from a variety of state, federal, and private agencies.
Vital services, such as: food, shelter, clothing, health screenings, benefits counseling, and referrals to a variety of other necessary services such as housing, employment, and substance abuse treatment, are provided. In addition, access to Homeless Courts where veterans are able to resolve minor violations and warrants, are also available. These critical services are often the catalyst that enables homeless veterans to reenter mainstream society.
The concept of Stand Down, as related specifically to the homeless veteran crisis, was the brainchild of two Vietnam Veterans, Robert Van Keuren and Dr. Jon Nachison, with the support of Vietnam Veterans of San Diego. The first Stand Down was held in San Diego during the summer of 1988. The popularity of the event has steadily grown from the original in 1988 to 190 throughout the nation each year. It is estimated that in 2009 alone more than 42,000 homeless veterans received assistance at Stand Down
